The Department of General Services is committed to providing timely, cost effective, and high-quality services to our customers while achieving the highest levels of customer satisfaction. Through annual and long-range facility planning activities, the department plans, provides, and maintains the City’s facilities infrastructure which supports the quality of life and serves as a foundation of a healthy economy. The City of Durham is home to more than 250,000 residents. To protect and serve these individuals and the thousands of visitors that the City hosts daily, the Durham Fire Department employs 318 personnel; approximately 90% serving in field operations. The Durham Emergency Communications Center is the primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the residents of Durham and Durham County. The geographic service area encompasses 296 square miles with approximately 250,000 residents. The Department of Community Development is responsible for coordinating the City’s community development and neighborhood stabilization and revitalization efforts including financial empowerment and home retention, affordable housing, and homelessness services programs.
